Are You a Christian Snob?

The title is a trick question, because the words ‘Christian’ & ‘snob’ do not go together. Yet, I notice it ALL the time. So, does the whole freaking world. I know you have to. Sometimes we probably are the snob.

Let’s look at the snob definition:

a person with an exaggerated respect for high social position or wealth who seeks to associate with social superiors & dislikes people or activities regarded as lower-class.
  • a person who believes that their tastes in a particular area are superior to those of other people.

Here’s what I wonder: Are we letting these qualities work their way into our Christianity & distort the expression of the gospel in our lives? It is a false gospel that says there are levels of people, that there are good & bad people, that there are people below our association. Do we catch ourselves backing up from people or groups of people & judging those people as somehow less than us? I’m glad Jesus doesn’t!

Have we forgotten that we ourselves were in need of forgiveness for debts we couldn’t pay? While we were yet sinners –in the middle of being in our sin–Christ died for us. Do we now judge those doing the same things we ourselves needed forgiveness for? Or maybe we are judging people’s lives because they seem messier than ours? We don’t want to get our hands dirty sometimes. We need to examine ourselves, be willing to check our hearts, for a lack of compassion or understanding for others. We do this because we know that we need that same compassion & understanding for all of our own weaknesses. We only rise above those things by the blood of Jesus. It’s not by our desire or effort, but it is God’s grace– ALONE.

We need to pray about it. We need to be willing to see ourselves through the eyes of other people who we may not be loving the way Jesus has called us to.

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. Romans 12:3
